The Appalacian Mountains stretch along the East Coast in a southwesterly direction from Canada to Alabama.  Many geologists estimate that the birth of this mountain chain took place nearly half a billion years ago, when tectonic plates collided.

Images courtesy of Diane Sawyer, GVCC.  These were taken on August 6th 2006 when my husband and I began our hike of the Appalachian Trail (from Maine to Georgia). This was the first day of the trip. The trail begins or ends on Mt Katahdin depending on your direction. We hiked along the backbone of the Appalachians completing the hike on Springer Mountain in Georgia on January 13th.
